What is the CDH?
CDH is a dual-function NAS server that performs both CD/DVD and file-storage server
applications. It means that the CDH can be considered as a CD/DVD-ROM server and/or
a file-storage server. CDH takes all the advantages of applications, which are now
available among CD/DVD-ROM, file storage NAS, and traditional file server.
|
 |
|
What are the major differences between CDH and CDM?
The CDM is specifically designated as a CD server as well as for data archiving applications.
For the CDH, the CDH supports most of the features existing on both optical media
and file server applications. Almost all of the features supported by the CDM have
been included in the CDH. Hereunder a summary of the most outstanding features, which
are only available on the CDH:
A new designed H/W platform with a much more powerful CPU.
More built-in memory (32MB) and support of up to 256MB SDRAM.
Four (4) independent EIDE UDMA mode 4 (ATA-66) channels.
A built-in temperature-monitoring unit with alarm feature.
An ease of use LCD panel with 3 buttons for status monitoring and configuration.
File volumes for users to read and write.
Support CD-R, CD-R/W drive to burn CD (DAO)
Support of Macintosh client (AFP).
Support FTP for data download and upload
More volumes (1.000) and shares (255) can be handled by a single server.
Support DVD-9, DVD-18 title and image
Availability of a local security database for local authentication.
Power management: safe shutdown, scheduled power on and off.
Configurable built-in RAID function
Support EIDE tape drive for backup
And more than you expect
|
Does the CDH manage files, CD/DVD titles, and CD/DVD images?
Yes, all of them can be managed by a single CDH. |
Can the CDH compute or execute applications like traditional file server?
The CDH can not compute or execute applications. It provides a way to not only manage
CD/DVD resources but also create an easy file storage area on the network. |
 |
What is the form-factor of CDH?
The CDH controller is using the traditional 5,25" form factor, which can be easily
plugged, in a half-height bay of a regular tower case. In addition to 5.25" half-height
dimension, a rack-mount 1U
model is also available now. |
|
|
|
What are key applications for the CDH?
We can distinguish the applications available for the CDH into two categories:
Optical NAS (CD/DVD-ROM server) application
File storage server application
For the CD/DVD-ROM server applications, the CDH can be used to manage all CD/DVD resources
concentrically like CD library, documentation center, training center, school, data
archiving and so on.
For the file-storage server application, file sharing is the most popular usage for
a NAS product as the CDH. It can be:
An extension of the personal storage area
A personal home directory of client-server network architecture
A common storage area for a workgroup or a project team
A storage area for people to backup their data from their desktop or laptop computers

Installation |
|
How
easy is it to install/initialize the CDH?
The CDH is specifically designed as
a plug & play stand-alone server. It is not necessary for you to install any additional
server or any driver/software application in your client PC. The only thing you have
to do is "plug in the network cable and power on the CDH". Only a few simple steps
have to be taken before you can access data from the CDH server.
I
n
the web-based administration page, initialize the connected hard disk drives as either
"mirror drive" or "file drive".
Create
partitions onto the "file drive" or mirror CD onto the "mirror drive".
Assign
appropriate permission to these share volume.
|
 |
Can
the LCD panel be used to configure the CDH?
Yes, you can manipulate the LCD panel
to make some basic settings for the CDH such as "IP address", "subnet mask", "default
gateway", and "time/date". After these basic settings have been changed, system will
automatically prompt you to restart to make these changes taking effect. |
|
|
What
will be the advantage of having the LCD panel with the CDH?
In addition to performing the basic
settings on the LCD panel, the CDH will report some of the system status onto the
LCD panel such as "CPU temperature", configuration, firmware version, event status
etc. It is very convenient for the system administrator to realize the major system
status without having to go into web-based administration page. |
|
|
|
Should
I connect all three connectors resided in the small expansion board (power control
board)?
Yes, all these three small connectors
have to be well connected. The six-pin connector is for connecting to the motherboard.
The three-pin connector is for connecting to the ATX power control line. The two-pin
connector is for connecting to the power switch (triggering type) of the tower case.
If either one of them is not well connected, it will result to:
CDH can not be powered on or shutdown properly.
The LCD panel will always show "System Power
On" and can not function at all.
|
|
|
|
How
to use the "DIP switch" located on the Power Control Board?
There are four modes to which the DIP switch can be set:
Normal Mode: (default setting) Dip1 =Off, Dip2
=Off.
Recovery Mode: Dip1 =On, Dip2 =Off.
MFG Mode: Dip1 =Off, Dip2 =On.
Factory Default Mode: Dip1 =On, Dip2 =On. Basically,
the users can only access their CDH in the "Normal Mode". The "Recovery" and "MFG"
modes are only available for diagnostic purposes by the manufacturer; and the normal
user will not be able to access the CDH under these two modes. The CDH will reset
all parameters of the server to the factory defaults when the DIP switch is set in
the "Factory Default Mode". If you have set the DIP switch to "Factory Default Mode",
you have to change the setting back to "Normal Mode" before the CDH boots the next
time.
|
 |
|
What
will the CDH look like after it has been set to "Factory Default Mode"?
All of the settings of the CDH will be returned to default value after it has been
set to "Factory Default Mode", which are:
Server settings: notification level, LCD soft-banner,
code page, schedule power-on/shutdown, CD mount-sequence, administration password,
time-zone, etc.
Network settings: IP relative settings, server/workgroup/domain
names, security mode, etc.
Device settings: operating mode of CD/DVD/CD-R/CD-RW
and options
Share/volume settings: share/volume name, security
relative settings, etc.
Security and User database: user database and
permission list associated with shares will be removed.
|
|
|
|
What
are the default values of the major settings of the CDH?
The default settings relative to the first time installation are:
IP & net-mask: 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0
SMB domain/workgroup name: WORKGROUP
SMB server name: SMBxxxxxxxx
NCP server name: NCPxxxxxxxx
AFP server name: AFPxxxxxxxx
<xxxxxxxx> is the last 8-digit of the MAC address which goes along with each
CDH controller.
The MAC address can be found at either the back of your controller or the tower.
|
Does
the CDH supports UPS systems?
No, the CDH cannot communicate with
UPS systems. |
 |
|
Device Management |
What
kind of device interface the CDH can support?
The CDH supports CD/DVD-ROM, CD-R/RW, tape and hard disk drives with the EIDE interface. |
|
|
Can
I connect CD/DVD-ROM, CD-R/RW, tape, and hard disk drives onto the same CDH?
Yes, you can connect CD/DVD-ROM, CD-R/RW, and tape drives together with hard disk
drives to the CDH. For example, you can connect 2 CD/DVD-ROM and 6 hard disk drives
or 4 CD/DVD-ROM drives and 4 hard disk drives onto the CDH. |
|
|
How
many storage devices can be connected onto the CDH?
There are 4 independent EIDE channels supported by the CDH. It means you can connect
up to 8 EIDE devices with the CDH.
|
|
|
|
Is
there any capacity limitation of hard disk drives connected onto the CDH? No,
there is no capacity limitation of hard disk drives connected onto the CDH. The hard
disk drive must be EIDE interface and ATA compliant. |
|
|
Can
I connect ATA-100 hard disk drives to the CDH?
Yes, but the CDH will configure these
hard drives to operate at UDMA-66 mode. |
 |
|
|
What
operating modes can be configured to a hard disk drive connected onto the CDH?
The hard disk drives connected with the CDH can be configured as either a "CD mirror
storage device" or a "file storage device". A "CD mirror storage device" represents
a hard disk drive which can store CD images. A "file storage device" represents a
hard disk drive which can be partitioned to several file volumes for data accessing
(read and write). |
|
|
What
operating modes can be configured to a CD/DVD-ROM drive connected with the CDH?
The CD/DVD-ROM drives connected onto the CDH can be configured as either a "direct
access device" or as a "mirroring device". A "direct access device" means users can
access (read only) data directly from the CD/DVD title. A "mirroring device" means
this CD/DVD-ROM drive can only mirror CD/DVD titles to the hard disk drive, but users
cannot access data directly from the inserted CD/DVD title. |
|
|
What
does "CD/DVD caching" mean?
The behavior of CD/DVD caching is quite similar with CD/DVD mirror. The only difference
between these two is the availability of CD/DVD image stored in the CDH when the inserted
CD/DVD title is no longer available in the CD/DVD drive. For CD/DVD caching, the cached
image (in mirror drive) will survive only when the title is still left in the drive.
When you eject the title from the drive, the respective cached image will also be
removed permanently from the mirror drive automatically. This special application
is quite useful if you have the legal concern about sharing CD onto the network. You
can find an option "Delete the mirrored image when CD is ejected" in "CD Mirror" mode
to enable CD/DVD caching function. |
 |
What
operating modes can be configured to a CD-R or CD-R/W drive connected with the CDH?
All operating modes supported by CD/DVD-ROM drive are also supported by CD-R and CD-R/W
drive. In addition, you can also burn CD onto the connected CD-R or CD-R/W drive,
so called "CD Record". The "mirrored images" stored in "mirror drive" can be recorded
to the recordable device like CD-R or CD-R/W drive using the CDH web-based administration
page or the bundled software "eConsole". |
|
|
|
Can
I connect a CD/DVD/CD-RW/tape and a hard disk drive to the same IDE channel? No,
you can't. The CDH can not function properly under such configuration. |
|
|
|
Can
I connect a CD-R/RW and a CD/DVD-ROM drive to the same IDE channel? Yes,
but we suggest not to perform any mirror image task while recording a CD-R/RW. |
|
|
Can
I connect a CD/DVD/CD-RW drive and a tape drive to the same IDE channel?
Yes, you can. |
Can
I create both mirror and file volumes into the same hard disk drive?
No, you have to initialize a hard disk drive as either a "CD mirror storage device"
(mirror drive) or as a "file storage device" (file drive). |
Does
the CDH supports DVD-R or DVD-RAM devices?
No, currently the CDH does not support DVD-R or DVD-RAM drives. |
 |
|
Volume & Share Management |
What
is meant by "volume" in the CDH?
"Volume" is the minimum storage unit for the system administrator to manage data stored
in the CDH. The types of "volumes" hosted by the CDH include CD/DVD title, CD/DVD
mirrored image and file partition (volume). The data management applied to the CDH
is volume-basis. |
|
|
How
many volumes can be created and managed by the CDH?
A CDH server can host up to 1000 volumes, which include the mounted CD/DVD titles
in the CD/DVD-ROM drives, mirrored CD/DVD images stored in the CD mirror storage devices,
and the file partitions created in the file storage devices. |
|
|
What
is meant by "share" in the CDH?
According to the network file sharing protocol, "share" is the basic network resource
unit exposed onto the network. There are two types of shares available in the CDH:
"physical share" and "virtual share".When
a single volume, managed by the CDH, is exposed to the network, it is called a physical
share. To have a physical share on the CDH is similar as to share a single folder
of a Windows host to the network. The CDH
also allows the system administrator to group a couple of volumes managed by the CDH
and expose them to the network as a single share. This is what we call a "virtual
share". |
 |
How
many shares can be managed by the CDH and exposed to the network?
Up to 255 shares can be managed by the CDH and exposed to the network at the same
time; and each individual share can be either a physical or a virtual share. 4 system
shares ("SYS", "MIRROR", "CACHE", "CDROM") are already occupied by the CDH; and there
are 251 shares left for system administrator to create his/her own. |
|
|
Is
there any size limitation of a volume managed by the CDH?
CD/DVD title: DVD-9 & DVD-18Mirror image: 64 GBFile volume: 64 Gb (this limitation
will be removed in firmware version v3.20 and later) |
|
|
Where
to find the "mirrored" or "cached" image in the CDH?
When a CD/DVD title has been mirrored or cached to the CDH, it won't be shown in the
root of the server automatically. You can find them located in "\\<server name>\MIRROR"
or "\\<server name>\CACHE". If you want to expose these image volumes as network
shares, you can get into web-based administration page "Share Manager V Share a Volume". |
|
|
Will
the CDH automatically expose a new created CD/DVD mirror image as a network share
instead of locating it under "MIRROR" share?
Yes, you can enable the mirror option
"Enable share when mirror is completed" when you configure a CD/DVD drive as a CD
mirror device. This feature is only available in the CDH firmware v3.20 and later. |
 |
|
Can
I read/mirror the CD titles with "CD-Extra", "Mixed-Mode (Data+Audio)", or CDI from/to
the CDH? No, these CD formats are
not supported by the CDH. |
Can
I group file volumes into a single share (Virtual Share)?
No, for security reasons, the CDH
does not allow grouping file volumes into a single share. For example, someone has
a Full access right in file volume A but only Read permission on File volume B. If
now he groups these two file volumes into a virtual share, the permissions set on
the file volumes A & B will be ignored and the permission set on the virtual share
will replace them. |
|
|
|
Power Management |
What
type of switching power supply is recommended to connect with the CDH?
We strongly recommend you to install ATX switching power supply with the CDH because
the features of controlling ATX power supply have been included in the hardware and
firmware of the CDH. |
|
|
What
power management features are supported by the CDH?
The following outstanding features on power management have been supported by the
CDH if an ATX power supply is engaged. For example, "safe shutdown", "schedule shutdown"
and "schedule power ON". |
|
|
|
Network Connectivity |
What
is the network topology supported by the CDH?
Ethernet. The CDH is equipped with
a 10BaseT Ethernet/100BaseTX Fast Ethernet auto-sensing / auto-negotiation network
adapter. |
|
|
Does
the CDH support Token-Ring?
No, the only network topology supported
by the CDH is Ethernet. |
 |

Macintosh clients access data directly from the CDH through the network?
AppleTalk (AppleShare), TCP/IP (AppleShare
IP), and Hierarchical File System (HFS) are all supported by the CDH. The Macintosh
client can use the "Network Browser" and the "Chooser" to locate, mount and access
(read/write) data directly from the shares/volumes managed by the CDH. |
|
|
Can
the clients of different operating systems access data from the CDH at the same time?
Yes, the CDH support multiple communication
and file sharing protocols. It means that the data stored in the CDH can be accessed
by multiple OS platforms at the same time. |
|
|
Does
the CDH support pure IP protocol for NetWare 5?
The pure Internet protocol (Pure IP)
for NetWare 5 is not yet supported by the CDH. |
|
|
Is
the CDH compliant with Microsoft Distributed File System (DFS)?
Yes, the share volume of the CDH can
be redirected to the DFS root of Windows NT/2000 with DFS service installed. |
|
|
Does
the CDH support NetWare NDS?
No, the CDH does not support NetWare
NDS. |
 |
|
Security |
What
kinds of security policies are supported by the CDH?
Two
kinds of security policies are supported by the CDH: "share level security" and "user
level security".
For share level security, an access password can be assigned to each individual share;
and the access password is file sharing protocol independent when user level security
is disabled.
For user level security, the authentication process can be handled by an authentication
server (such as NT domain controller or NetWare bindery server) or CDH itself (local
user database). |
|
|
Is
the security settings applied to "share" or "file"?
The security settings can only be applied to "share" instead of "file". |
|
|
How
many user accounts can be stored in security database of the CDH?
Up to 512 accounts information can be stored in the CDH, which include 128 local accounts
and 32 local groups. |
|
|
What
is the meaning of "share level security"?
"Share
level security" means that the "share" is only protected by a password; and username
is not concerned. |
|
|
What
is the meaning of "user level security"?
"User level security" means that the "share" is protect by both password and username.
The information of username and password can be referred to either in the authentication
server (such as NT or Novell server) or the CDH. |
|
|
How
can I integrate the CDH with Microsoft NT domain security?
You can go through the steps as recommended below to integrate the CDH with Microsoft
NT domain security:
Enable
"user level security" option in "Windows Network" of the CDH
Assign
a domain name, which is the NT domain for authentication to the CDH.
Assign
a permitted NT domain member information to CDH.
Save
the settings and restart the CDH. After
all these have been done, the user/group information of NT domain can be retrieved
by the CDH when you begin to assign "permission" to the shares. |

|
Message
"Can not get user list from PDC" showed when I using Share Manager to retrieve the
user account from PDC, Why?
Here are four points you need to verify.
1. Make
sure the CDH already set on User Level Security.
2. Your
CDH located on the same domain with PDC.
3. Double
check the user account you field- in was a legal user in PDC.
4. The
user account you field-in must has password. |
|
|
Some
people will lose in user list when I using Share Manager to retrieve the user account
from PDC.
CDH can support up to 255 user accounts and 255 workgroups, so if your PDC contains
user more than the limitation, the problem possible occur. The workaround is to add
a workgroup that users belong into the permission column so that you will be able
to use the particular share. |
|
|
How
can I integrate the CDH with Novell NetWare bindery security?
The way to integrate the CDH with NetWare bindery security is similar to Microsoft
Network. Before you can successfully retrieve the user information from NetWare bindery
server, a permitted NetWare user account and password has to be assigned to the CDH.
After this, you can begin to assign the permission of share to the NetWare users. |
 |
Does
the CDH support NDS?
No, NDS is not yet supported by the CDH. |
|
|
Can
I still apply user level security to the CDH if there is no other authentication server
available?
Yes, you can manipulate the local user database of CDH to have your data protected
by user level security policy. |
|
|
There
is an Event Log in Administration Page of CDH. Can it be transfer to plain text format?
Where can I get it?
Yes, CDH will concurrently produce two types event log. One is in HTML format and
the other will locate under SYS folder of the home directory. To be able to access
SYS directory, the administrator password is required. |
|
|
How
can I use Email warning function of CDH?
Follow the below steps:
1. Login
to Administrator home page.
2. Select
"Server Setting" page.
3. Select
"Event Log Setting".
4. Configure
"Mail Log Level" option. Enable warning, error or emergency from the Mail Log Level.
Default setting is "Disable".
5. Insert
your SMTP's IP address.
6. Insert
your Email address. After
configurations, CDH will automatically send you an Email when the event happens. |
 |
Security
seems no function when I open a password-protected share through web browser?
It probably causes by you forgot to set administrator password. As CDH security designed,
web security will be opened only CDH administrator password has been set, and no matter
the server was set on share or user level security. |
|
|
When
I use Internet Explore to open a password protected HTTP page, why CDH didn't request
for a password?
This maybe caused by not setting the administrator password for CDH. According to
the design of CDH, no matter its user level or share level security, a password has
to be set before WEB security can be active. |
|
|
Why
can't I use "Anonymous" account name to login CDH through FTP?
Yes, CDH does not support "Anonymous" account to login CDH. The user name will have
to be a legal account of CDH; otherwise the CDH will not allow to be accessed. |
|
|
How
does CDH perform security control under FTP?
1. Share
level mode: Using "Share Name" as a login name when login FTP. Password will be the
"Share password" of that particular share.
2. User
Level mode: when login, the user name & password have to be a legal account in
either CDH or PDC. Once you login, you will be able to see the entire network share.
To access the share will be depending on your permission. |
 |
|
Data Accessing |
How
can the users access (read/write) data from the CDH?
You can manipulate the standard browsing tools coming with the OS such as Microsoft
Explorer, File Manager, etc. to locate and access data from "shares" of the CDH. You
can read data from the read-only volumes (such as CD/DVD titles, CD/DVD mirrored images)
or read/write data from/to the file volumes of the CDH if you have permission to do
this. |
|
|
Can
the user remove the "share" ("volume") from the CDH by using a standard OS tool like
Microsoft Explorer?
No, the user can not remove the whole share ("volume") of the CDH by using a standard
OS tool (such as Microsoft Explorer). But the user can still delete files/folders
located underneath the file volume by using Microsoft Explorer if he has the permission
to do this. If the share (volume) of the CDH has to be removed, the system administrator
has to get into the HTTP administration page to delete it. |
|
|
Can
the CDH behave itself as a stand-alone server without the existence of another file
server?
Yes, when CDH is working in Microsoft, Macintosh, UNIX and HTTP network environments,
the CDH behaves itself as a stand-alone server. But for the CDH to work in a NetWare
network environment, a NetWare bindery server has to exist along with the CDH. If
the NetWare bindery server does not exist, the NetWare clients are not able to locate
and log onto the CDH to access data. |
|
|
Can
I use Linux client to mount HFS CD title from the CDH via NFS?
No, HFS CD format is not supported and recognized by Linux. The same result will be
also observed when Windows clients try to access HFS CD from the CDH. |
 |
What
does CD "mount sequence" mean?
There are three major CD formats recognized by different operating systems: "ISO",
"UDF", and "HFS". It is possible to mix more than one format into a single CD or DVD
title. The CDH provides several alternatives for users to decide which formats should
be mounted when a hybrid CD/DVD or image is inserted or created. The mount sequence
will be applied to the whole CDH and only one of the available formats of the hybrid
CD/DVD can be mounted. |
|
|
I
can open a share volume in the CDH, but sometimes I can not find this share volume
from the Internet Explorer. Why?
This is because the web browser may
have "cache" for this page. You just need to click the "Refresh" button of the web
browser and the updated content will be displayed. |
|
|
When
I create a File Volume in the CDH, I can see the volume from the "Network Neighborhood"
but I cannot write any data to it. Why?
In the CDH, the default permission for a new created "File Volume" is "Read Only".
You will need to go into the web-based administration page "Share Manager" and change
the permission level to "Full Access". Then you can add/remove data through the "Network
Neighborhood" or the "File Explorer".
|
|
|
Which
web browser does the CDH support?

I backup and restore data via using commercial backup software?
The data stored in the file volume
of the CDH can be backed up over the network to the backup device (such as a tape
drive) of the server on which the backup software (such as ArcServ) is running and
vice versa. The data in the backup device can also be restored to the file volume
of the CDH over the network. |
|
|
Can
I select multiple mirrored images to burn to a single CD-R or CD-R/W drive?
Yes, you need to select the images
from "Device Manager -> CDxx (CD-R/RW drive) -> CD Record -> Recording Setting".
When the first image has been completely burned, the CDH will eject the disc tray
automatically and a message shown in LCD will also remind you to continue. At that
moment, you only have to insert another blank CD-R and close the door to start the
next recording task. |
|
|
Can
I duplicate a single mirrored image to multiple copies of CD-R discs?
